Jeera Rice (Cumin Flavored Rice)

Jeera rice is a Indian style Rice dish flavored with cumin. This goes very well with indian curries and lentils.

Ingredients:

Serves 2-4

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 2 tbsp oil or butter
  • 2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 4 green cardamoms (optional)
  • 1 black cardamom (optional)
  • 2-3 cloves
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tsp salt or to taste (optional)

How to make Jeera Rice:

  1. Wash the rice and soak the rice in water for 20 minutes. Then rinse it under running water until the water runs clear.
  2. Heat the oil in a heavy bottom deep pan or pot.
  3. Add the cumin seeds, cardamoms, bay leaves and cinnamon stick. Let it sizzle for few seconds until cumin seeds start getting golden brown.
  4. Add the soaked rice and sauté for 1-2 minutes on medium heat.
  5. Add 1 cup of water, and salt. Give the rice a stir. Then cover the pan with foil and put the lid on the top to keep steam inside the pan. Reduce the heating to low-medium and cook for 8 minutes.
  6. Then remove from the heat and check with the fork if rice is cooked an fluffy. Let it rest for few minutes. Serve hot with your favorite curry.
  7. Remove the pan and serve with youf favorite curry.
